Arabic Dumbek Drumming Classes

Session starts March 22nd for 6 weeks.
BellyUp hosts Kevork Geurgerian of Hands of Rhythm as he facilitates a rhythmic journey into the world of Arabic drumming and all its magical, subtle sounds and nuances. This program is designed to teach the foundational skills essential to building your Dumbek technique. We encourage students to purchase their own dumbek in order to practice at home as well, however, BellyUp will provide dumbeks for your in-class use. Kevork will cover a variety of tradtional Arabic rhythms including Saiidi, Maqsoum, Masmoudi, Beledi, Chiftetelli, Karachi, Fellahi to name a few. Students are taught comprehensive breakdowns of these rhythms. No previous musical experience is required to learn the Dumbek - just an open mind and a willingness to learn and practice. Bellydancers also enjoy learning to play the Dumbek as a way of expanding their musicality and broadening their versatility as a performer.
Cost is $108 for 6 week. Add $5 per class if you require drum rental.
Drop-ins $20. Plus $5 drum rental if required. Advance registration preferred as the class is ongoing.
Advance registration is required. Please note that while drop-ins are permitted the instructor will not slow down instruction for the drop in student as the program is progressive and builds week to week. We encourage students to register for the complete program in order to get the maximum benefit out of every class.
About the Dumbek
The goblet shaped Dumbek is played all over the Middle East in nightclubs, weddings and on the streets. It has a magical power that attracts people from every feasible background and persuasion. In the Middle East, musicians have unlimited creative license for variation and improvisation. And the drummer, bellydancers and audience come together to create an intoxicating musical atmosphere of fun and celebration.
About Kevork
Kevork's infectious enthusiasm for Middle Eastern drumming stems from his own cultural background. Born in Egypt to Armenian parents, Kevork began his study of Latin percussion and African rhythms at a very young age. He has studied over the past 25 years with many of the world's finest teachers who have inspired him to bring the basic ground skills of rhythmic communication to communities and organizations through is company "Hands of Rhythm". His extensive background in adult education has provided him with exceptional abilities in facilitation for corporate events, leadership workshops and professional growth.
