The history and evolution of Egyptian bellydance (both Oriental & Folklore) is something every student of the dance needs to learn on top of dance technique. A student cannot fully learn or appreciate the art of the dance if you don't have an understanding of how it originated and evolved. Watching examples of those dancers past and present connects you to the dance. At BellyUp we include dance history every day in our classes and in our studio. In our classes our instructors will regularly connect the movements they teach to dance history. We host Master teachers for weekend bellydance intensives. Many of these Masters are legendary Egyptian teachers and performers who come to BellyUp to teach every year. We watch videos in class and play them in the studio regularly. We want students to think about the origins of the dance and how this relates to what they are learning and doing in class. Watch out for notices about upcoming movie nights at BellyUp. BellyUp has an extensive library of video footage from the Golden Era of bellydance to the most current and hottest dancers on the Cairo dance circuit. Now enjoy the selection of clips we've chosen below to show you a sampling of Bellydancers starting with present day Egyptian and some non-Egyptian superstars to the bellydancers of the Golden Era.
But before taking a look at the Bellydancers of Cairo and throughout the world, every student of the dance mus be aware of Oum Kalthoum the legendary Egyptian born singer whose voice and songs are among the favourite pieces of music and "must know" songs for bellydancers. She is as beloved a singer today, many years after her passing, as she was in the height of her career. Click here to read more and listen to Oum Kalthoum's magical voice and lyrics.
